Nuns, Guns, and Useful Idiots

Image
Useful idiots: 1. Political jargon for well-intentioned, but unwitting people exploited by nefarious politicians for evil ends There’s an idea floating about that our present liberal-progressive atheism, PC suppression of free speech, gun-grabbing naivete, and overall feckless ability to cope with reality is somehow useful. The NAACP defense of a ‘self-identifying’ white official as a black woman, Rachel Dolezal,  is only the most recent imbecility to laugh at. The idea is that leftists are  ‘useful idiots’ . “ There are no morals in politics; there is only expedience. A scoundrel may be of use to us just because he is a scoundrel.”  – Vladimir Lenin Falsely attributed to Vladimir Lenin, the term ‘ useful idiots ’, became popular with the Bolsheviks after the 1917 overthrow of last Romanov,  Tsar Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russians.  Many sympathetic intellectual Brits and Yanks flocked to the Bolshevik cause. Gluttons for Guilt and Shame

Image
guilt ɡilt/ noun 1. the fact of having committed a specified or implied offense or crime. “Guilt is the interest paid on a debt you never owed in the first place.” That was my grandfather’s response to a question during a chess game over five decades ago.  “Regret and remorse are necessary to our repentance…but not guilt” , he said, “total waste of time and effort”. Naturally, I didn’t believe him. After all, I was 8 years old and knew everything by that time. Checkmate! As the years slipped by, and him long dead, I've changed my mind. Gramps was right. Guilt is the bastard child of regret and remorse. How else can you explain criminal, psychological, political and religious guilt as powerful motivators for good and evil? How else can you explain the ravages of ‘shame’?  Guilt is the broken record of conscience. It goes round and round stuck in a groove between regret and remorse. Worse, it is often confused with having a conscience.  M...

Slouching Towards Tyranny

Image
Slouch: verb, gerund or present participle: slouching 1 . stand, move, or sit in a lazy, drooping way. Tyranny is the morality of the amoral. It looks like it’s poised for a big comeback. Global lack of a clear, objective moral compass in western democracies is beginning to take its toll on freedom. As a result, just since the New Year 2015 arrived, a number of world and national events indicate western democracies are slouching towards tyranny. Plato was right, again. Democracy concludes in tyranny. Here are some indicators and some prophetic warnings from Alexis de Tocqueville in 1835 and Joseph Ratzinger (the future Pope Benedict XVI) in 1969. ·      ISIS attract millennial jihadists building a modern Caliphate by gobbling up vast swaths of Iraq, Syria, Libya and Afghanistan ·      Tories thrash Labour turning the recent national UK election into a rout for the British right-wing ·      American Cath...
